FAQs
What is the difference between therapeutic massage/bodywork and relaxation massage?
Therapeutic bodywork focuses on restoring normal joint function, improving and managing chronic pain, increasing flexibility through soft tissue manipulation and joint mobilization. Techniques and treatment are individualized. Therapeutic sessions can be done clothed, unlike a relaxation massage where getting undressed to your comfort level is recommended. Therapeutic massage may require active participation, the use of Graston technique, chinese herbs, cupping therapy, neurologic stretching and/or auricular therapy. You can expect recommended exercises and stretches as “homework.”
Relaxation massage is also known as Circulatory/Swedish massage and does not require active participation on your pat and the pressure is significantly less than a therapeutic bodywork session. Imagine what you’d experience in a spa, only half the cost and local!
Do I need to get fully undressed?
No! Undress to the level you feel comfortable with. Many people choose to disrobe completely in relaxation massages (half go commando, and half choose underpants). Therapeutic bodywork does not require you to get fully undressed. Throughout the entire session, you will remain covered with a sheet, except for the area being worked on.
How often should I get massages?
The answer depends on many factors: Your physical condition, performance level if you’re an athlete, your mental and emotional health, and your circumstances and (of course) budget.
If you’re an athlete we will come up with a plan based on your goals for your training cycle and season. Off season will focus on recovery, strength and mobility.
Once a month is ideal for monthly maintenance work, although understandably it’s not possible for everyone. Even if you can commit to once a quarter, you’re sure to notice positive changes in your physical health and stress levels.
What if I fall asleep, snort, or fart during my session?
It happens, we’re human! No shame, seriously it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. All of those are signs that your body is relaxing which is the primary goal of a Swedish massage!
What can be expected of my child who is coming in for a Sports massage?
Our little athletes will be in the company of their parent at all times so parent and child can understand what is causing the discomfort in their body and work together to improve the symptoms. A complete postural assessment and range of motion exam will be completed.
How much should I tip my massage therapist?
Like other service settings, the standard spa gratuity is 20% of the treatment price. Of course, if you received an exceptional massage, feel free to toss your therapist a little bit extra to express your gratitude!
**Our therapists do not diagnose and prescribe. However, we work with Wellness professionals who can.
